If you don't get to the front of your team roping saddle and if you don't get your hip pockets off the back of the saddle - your chances of winning a roping are near zero percent. How quickly you can get up and front determines how quickly you can rope. How you control your balance determines your roping accuracy. Increased balance not only keeps you from falling from your horse, but is the basis for good horsemanship. Have you ever heard anyone say, "that's a great standing saddle?" Probably not. Yet to compete and catch effectively, a team roper must be up and front. Conventional saddles have been designed for you to sit. The next time you go to a roping or practice, watch the headers "waller" from back to front as they struggle to maintain their balance. Then watch the heelers not only struggle to maintain a position in their saddles, but in almost every run - where they miss - lose their up and front position through the heeling corner. Maybe you have experienced the balance struggle. Well, guess what? It's not you - it's your saddle! After seeing hundreds of students at our roping schools fight the balance battle, and remembering my own balance struggles, I decided I could and would re-design a saddle for team ropers. But the changes needed couldn't be accomplished by a saddle maker. The saddle tree had to be re-designed with five major design changes and more than half a dozen minor changes. From all this work, a saddle designed for team ropers has evolved. Even with the major changes to our saddle trees, we
have been able to maintain - and improve upon - the team
roping characteristics of great horse-fitting saddles
throughout history.
FOR THE HORSE:
New InventionMy family has been in the saddle tree and saddle
making business for over 55 years, and I, personally, have
been in the business for over 35 years.
When David Jones came to me with his plans to
redesign the saddle tree and saddle, I assured him that there
was nothing he could design that had not already been done.
David proved to me that it not only could be done -
but that the changes work. The changes make so much
sense I don't know how or why they have been overlooked for
so long. He has come up with at least 5 major changes and
several minor changes to the traditional team roping tree
that in my 35 years of experience have never been
attempted as he has designed them.
We are witnessing history in the making with this
saddle tree design and patent. Many gimicky changes in
saddles have come and gone, but this is the first time actual
functional changes - that work - have been made based
upon a combination of Physics and Bio-mechanics.
These saddle trees and the resulting saddles are
already having, and will continue to have, a major impact on
the team roping industry and the western industry in general.
The customers I have met, who have purchased
these saddles, are extremely impressed with the function
and quality of this new design.
U.S. Patent No. 5,953,889
“Our current models are really great. The
standard gullet width is 6 3/4 inches however the tremendous fit of the bar
twist is really important on our saddles. We haven't had any problems
fitting a wide variety of horses. Because of the design of our saddles (the
patent) and the vertical balance of the saddle, a rider takes a different
size than traditional. Without the rise to the front of the saddle seat and
with the center ride seat pocket, wasted space in the saddle is eliminated.
If you normally ride in a 15 1/2 saddle you may want a 13 1/2 or medium in
our saddles. Yes, our saddles are different. We guarantee your satisfaction.
We base our sizes on jean size. The saddles come in small
(13"), medium (13 1/2"), large (14"), x-large (14 1/2")
and 2x-large (15”). A small fits jean size up to 30”, medium
31-33“, large 34-36, x-large 37-39 and 2x-large 40”+. You also have a
choice of conchos and custom conchos are available. Since the saddles are all custom built, you
can order a variety of options. Order time has been about six weeks and we have slots open for orders placed
now. Prices start at $2,795 for the full rough out model and all of our
saddles are custom handmade in Texas. We are very proud of the value in our
completely custom, hand-made saddles. The fork (swell) has more clearance to the
horse and allows the saddle to fit a wider variety of horses. Our saddles come with our Patented,
Crooked Stirrups®, angled riding stirrups, the official stirrup of the WTRC on them, at no extra
charge ($150 value). Trust me on this, you do want them. They are as good as
the saddles. Check them out on the “crooked stirrups” page in the menu
at the top or bottom of this page. Matching breast collars are available as an
option. They are our, special design, one piece, 4 strap collars with a deep
throat cut-out . They don't bounce. They are tooled (or not tooled) to match
the saddles with the tooling pattern you choose. The saddles have a center riding pocket with
the stirrups leathers and riding pocket placed over the horse’s center of
gravity. The increased stability is amazing. The front of the bar pad
extends forward and drastically reduces the leverage to the saddle horn. Our saddles are definitely different and
designed to make a positive difference in your riding and roping. Our
saddles are patented (U.S. Patent No. 5,953,889). Thank you for you looking at our saddles. Let
us know if you want to order or if we can answer any more of your questions.”
